The empty bladder

Abstract: The empty (near-empty) bladder can have a volume ranging from 0 to 30 ml. Its diagnosis is effectively and least invasively made by ultrasound (transvaginal superior). It is a key marker of normal bladder function. It is necessary for the accurate assessment of uterovaginal prolapse, as increasing bladder volume has been shown to reduce the extent of the prolapse. Any negative effect of prolapse on voiding is reduced at high bladder volumes compared to voiding from low bladder volumes (due to the same reductio… Show more

“…When filled with fluid, the distended bladder can enlarge to 15 times its decompressed volume, 33,34 reaching a capacity of approximately 400 cc or more. 35 Visually, distention leads to an apparent thinning of the layers.…”

“…A higher degree of prolapse might result in slower urine flow due to a kinking effect of the prolapse on the urethra. When the prolapse is relieved pre-operatively by either a pessary or the presence of a fuller bladder, urine flow rates tend to improve [29].…”

“…In one study, the mean MUFR was around 25% slower [19]. The exception to this is where there is a prolapse effect on voiding at low bladder volumes (extent of prolapse greater) relieved when voiding occurs from a higher bladder volume (prolapse reduced) [29].…”
