The Epidemiological Analysis of Pseudorabies Virus and Pathogenicity of the Variant Strain in Shandong Province

Abstract: Pseudorabies (PR) is a disease that is seriously endangering the pig industry in China. To understand the current prevalence of pseudorabies virus (PRV) in Shandong Province, China, 19,292 serum samples were collected from 16 locations in Shandong from 2018 to 2020. The gE antibody was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Ninety-seven suspected cases of PRV infection were collected from sick pigs vaccinated with Bartha-K61 to isolate PRV. The results showed that the average positive rate of the PRV g… Show more

“…Considering these cases of human PRV infection and the close relationship between pigs and humans, a large ammount of clinical cases and serum samples were collected from 2017 to 2018 in Hebei Province, China for the study. It has been reported that pigs infected with the PRV variant strain showed severe clinical symptoms such as high fever, tonsil bleeding, lung swelling and necrosis (26). Among the pigs suspected of PRV infection, abortion and stillbirth have the most occurrence (27), which is consistent with the cases in our study.…”

“…The serological detection of PRV gE antibodies is always used to evaluate the status of PRV field strain infection, due to the application of gE-deleted PRV vaccines. One study reported that PRV positive rates have decreased to 18.12% in 2020 from 38.20% in 2018 after screening 19,292 pig serum samples by using PRV gE ELISA [ 115 ]. Another report analyzed the gE antibodies from 256,326 serum samples, which were collected from 29 provinces in China from 2011 to 2021.…”

“…It can be seen that the PR epidemic situation in the Henan province has exhibited an obvious downward trend, which is in agreement with the tendency of eradication. Recent epidemiological studies showed that the seroprevalence of PRV decreased from 38.20% in 2018 to 18.12% in 2020 in the Shandong province [27] from 62.40% in 2013 to 51.59% in 2018 in Tianjin [28] and from 20.9% in 2013 to 11.6% in 2018 in the Heilongjiang province [29], but increased from 19.91% in 2016 to 25.46% in 2020 in the Hunan province [30]. These data reveal that the positive rate of PRV infection in pigs differed in different geographical regions of China, which may have been caused by different situations of co-infection, vaccine protection, feeding management, introduction and quarantine, etc.…”
