“…For counterarguments to this position, see Diewald and Smirnova (2010). A number of scholars (Chafe 1986;Traugott 1997;Smirnova 2006;Gisborne and Holmes 2007;Diewald and Smirnova 2010;Gisborne 2010;Whitt 2010) have identified aspects of evidentiality in English and German, and I will do the same here.…”

“…If this is right, then the Entailment Thesis just falls out of a plausible semantics for perceptionverbs in those contexts. For example, Gisborne (2010) and French (2012) argue that there are certain senses of 'see' in ascriptions of 'S sees that p' which are knowledgeascribing. If this is right, then it is hard to see how an Entailment Thesis is not true of those senses of 'see' when it is embedded in sentences of the form 'S sees that p'.…”

“…The gradualist tradition is in line with cognitive assumptions about the organization of lexical and grammatical categories, and although it is usually not explicit, most (functionalist) work in grammaticalization is consistent with many of the research results of the cognitive tradition. Indeed, there is now an emerging body of work in diachronic construction grammar, such as Gisborne andPatten (2011), Israel (1996), Patten (2010), Traugott (2003), Trousdale (2008), and Patten (2010), which brings the functionalist and cognitive traditions together in exploring language change.…”
