The Evolution of the Galaxy Rest-Frame Ultraviolet Luminosity Function Over the First Two Billion Years

Abstract: We present a robust measurement and analysis of the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) luminosity functions at z = 4 to 8. We use deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging over the CANDELS/GOODS fields, the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and the Hubble Frontier Field deep parallel observations near the Abell 2744 and MACS J0416.1-2403 clusters. The combination of these surveys provides an effective volume of 0.6-1.2 ×10 6 Mpc 3 over this epoch, allowing us to perform a robust search for faint (M UV = −18) and bright (M UV < −21) … Show more

“…The model is remarkably consistent with the observed data (Arnouts et al 2005;Oesch et al 2010;Oesch et al 2013bOesch et al , 2014Alavi et al 2014;Bowler et al 2015;Finkelstein et al 2015b;Bouwens et al 2015b,a), which is expected due to the success of our previous implementation of this class of models (Tacchella et al 2013;Trenti et al 2010Trenti et al , 2015. We find the model marginally overpredicts the bright end of the LF at z ∼ 0.3 and z ∼ 2 by ∼ 0.1 dex due to the difficulty in modeling dust extinction at these redshifts, but the observations are still within 2σ of our model.…”

“…At z > 7, the model describes the most recent observed data (Oesch et al 2013bFinkelstein et al 2015b;Bouwens et al 2015b,a) well, validating our simple approach. Our model predicts the trend of steepening faint-end slope to continue at z > 10, and number densities to drop rapidly.…”
