The fast molecular outflow in the Seyfert galaxy IC 5063 as seen by ALMA

Abstract: We use high-resolution (0.5 arcsec) CO(2−1) observations performed with the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array to trace the kinematics of the molecular gas in the Seyfert 2 galaxy IC 5063. The data reveal that the kinematics of the gas is very complex. A fast outflow of molecular gas extends along the entire radio jet (∼1 kpc), with the highest outflow velocities about 0.5 kpc from the nucleus, at the location of the brighter hot spot in the western lobe. The ALMA data show that a massive, fast outfl… Show more

“…Radio jet-driven outflows of molecular gas have also been detected in nearby galaxies (eg. Alatalo et al 2011;Tadhunter et al 2014;Morganti et al 2015). Using a total molecular gas mass of 5 × 10 9 M , a gas velocity of 100 km s −1 and velocity dispersion of 100 km s −1 , the energy required to accelerate the molecular gas is several ×10 57 erg.…”

“…This leads to overluminous CO emission, reducing the standard CO-to-H 2 conversion factor to X CO =0.41 Downes & Solomon 1998). Massive outflows of molecular gas can be driven by intense radiation or radio jets (Morganti et al 2005(Morganti et al , 2015Nesvadba et al 2006;Feruglio et al 2010;Alatalo et al 2011;Dasyra & Combes 2011;Rupke & Veilleux 2011;Sturm et al 2011;Cicone et al 2014;Tadhunter et al 2014). The high CO (4-3)/ (2-1) ratio in IC5063 implies that the molecular gas along the jet-driven outflow is optically thin (Dasyra et al 2016).…”

“…Despite their low power, they can impact the ISM of the host galaxy as shown in a number of cases, e.g. NGC 1266 (Alatalo et al 2011Nyland et al 2013Nyland et al , 2016, NGC 1433 (Combes et al 2013) and IC 5063 (Morganti et al 2015). It is therefore important that we study this population in more detail.…”
