This study explores the premise that a high degree of realism is not a necessary condition for a 'sense of place' in mediated experiences. We report on the usefulness of an intentionally low fidelity virtual environment which relies on the metaphor of the 'tourist gaze' and the power of imagination to create a sense of place. This application was a non-immersive representation of Edinburgh. In evaluation, participants reported experiencing a sense of place rather than a mere collection of images. We discuss the results in the light of weak and strong cognitive representation and indicate potential applications.

Resumo: O presente artigo objetiva problematizar a memória à luz da geografia. A memória, tomada em seu caráter especular – que duplica a percepção e as informações recebidas pelo fenômeno comunicacional num mnemotopos interior aos indivíduos – é tomada como elemento central numa revisão sobre o conceito de lugar. Vista como fenômeno simultaneamente individual e social a memória complexifica o lugar permitindo-o ser percebido e concebido em diversas escalas, além de compreendido como elemento que afeta os indivíduos e coletividades afetivamente e também politicamente. Por fim, o conceito de cenários é destacado como sendo capaz de ressaltar no lugar seu aspecto de teatralidade que, por sua vez, encontra na memória sua base de referência. Palavras-chave: Memória. Lugar. Corpo vivido. Cenários. Fenomenologia. PLACE AND MEMORY: SCENARIOS Abstract: The present paper is intended to problematize memory in the light of Geography. Memory, seen in its specular character – that doubles the perception and the informations that individuals receive through the communicational phenomenon in an interior mnemotopos – is taken as a central element in a review of the concept of place. Seen as both a personal and a social phenomenon simultaneously, memory turns ‘place’ into a more complex instance, allowing it to be perceived and conceived in many scales, besides being comprehended as an element that has affective and political effects on individuals and/or groups. Last, the concept of scenarios is highlighted for adding to place its theatrical aspect that meets in memory its baseline. Keywords: Memory. Place. Lived body. Scenarios. Phenomenology. LIEU ET MÉMOIRE : SCÉNARIOS Resumen: Le présent article est destiné à problématiser la mémoire à la lumière de la géographie. La mémoire, vue dans son caractère spéculaire - qui double la perception et les informations que les individus reçoivent à travers le phénomène communicationnel dans un mnemotopos intérieur - est considérée comme un élément central dans une analyse du concept de lieu. Vu simultanément à la fois comme un phénomène personnel et un phénomène social, la mémoire transformer lieu en plus complexe instance, ce qui lui permet d’être perçu et conçu dans de nombreuses échelles, en plus d’être compris comme un élément qui a des effets affectifs et politiques sur les individus et / ou groupes. Enfin, la notion de scénarios est mise en évidence pour ajouter au lieu son aspect théâtral qui réunit en mémoire sa base de référence. Palabras-clave: Mémoire. Lieu. Corps vivant. Scénarios.
