“…The nuclear morphology of club cells in P. lateristriga is in agreement with those found in non-Ostariophysi, as the lamprey species Ichthyomyzon bdellum (Jordan 1885) (cited as Ichthyomyzon unicuspis [42], in Cypriniformes [5], [8] and other Siluriformes [2], [4], [7], [9], [45], [46]. The nucleus is described as central, irregularly shaped, with peripheral condensed chromatin and prominent nucleoli.…”

“…The majority of studies involving ultrastructure of fish skin use high magnification micrographs, which make it difficult to identify these cell types [1], [9], [42][44].…”

“…The enormous club cells found in the epidermis of lamprey are known to essentially consist of large bundles of filaments that are helically arranged and in a clockwise orientation spiral away from the cell periphery to the center of the cell. Although, at 7 nm, the determined diameter of an individual club cell filament is slightly smaller than that usually observed for IFs (8-10 nm), their substructure strongly resembles that observed for keratin filaments [51]. The function of the club cells is still largely unknown, but, among other hypotheses, it was postulated that they may contribute to the composition of the mucous, which in lamprey skin is mainly secreted from superficial epithelial cells (mucous cells do not exist in the lamprey epidermis).…”

“…marinus . Later on, structural and ultrastructural studies (Pfeiffer & Pletcher, ; Downing & Novales, 1971 a , b , c ) confirmed the presence of the three basic cell types of Ficalbi. Based on those studies, the club cells were renamed as skein cells by Lane & Whitear () because, according to these authors, they could no longer be considered homologous to the club cells of the teleostean epidermis.…”
