“…?0.46 although their tinctorial properties have been a highly controversial issue. 46 T h e cells that lined the irregular spaces in one of our tumors possessed only very few membrane-limited dense granules, probably of lysosomal nature, large numbers of free ribosomes, and polysomes; however, neither their smooth endoplasmic reticulum nor the Golgi apparatus was prominently devel0ped.4~ These lining cells also lacked several of the characteristic features of granular pneumocytes, namely, the extensive Golgi apparatus, numerous multivesicular bodies, and, most significantly, the lamellar bodies. However, it is possible that the cells in our material repre- T h e prominent vasciilature of the tumors, as well ;IS the pronounced vascular sclerosis, are features which deserve further comment.…”

“…PETRIK and CoLLET (1974) conceived the idea that Clara cells of the mouse bronchial tree secrete other substance rather than pulmonary surfactant. KUHN III et al (1974) maintained that some elements of bronchiolar lining were derived from the Clara cells, and EVANS et al (1978) suggested that rat Clara cells change to the other kinds of cells using the 3H-thymidine autoradiography. PACK et al (1980PACK et al ( , 1981 described Clara cells of the mouse trachea as having three kinds of secretory granules released by apocrine as well as by exocytotic machanism.…”

“…They are located mainly in small conducting airways (3)(4), and are thought to secrete components of the extracellular lining of these airways (6). The extracellular lining of this region may be of particular importance because noxious agents inhaled into the lung commonly affect these airways (7), and because these airways are the site of obstruction early in the course of very common diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema (8).…”
