“…The association of monoclonal immunoglobulins with solid tumors in certain patients has long been recognized [1,12,15,19,21,30]. This association probably is not due to chance alone, since the incidence of monoclonal immunoglobulins in patients with solid tumors is clearly higher than that in the general population.…”

“…Overproduction of monoclonal immunoglobulins is generally associated with plasma cell dyscrasia [20]; however, monoclonal immunoglobulins have also been observed in many patients with other pathologic conditions [1,12,15,19,21,30], particularly neoplasia involving the gastrointestinal tract [1,15,21,30] and transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder [21]. Such proteins have also been termed "M components" [1].…”

“…Approaching the probable relationship between M-proteinaemia and cancer the other way around yielded no association either: in two cross-sectional studies, the prevalence of M-proteinaemia in patients with non-haematological tumours was not increased when compared with the prevalence in the general population [17,18].…”

“…No prognostic significance has been established for these gammopathies [6]. Monoclonal gammopathies are also described as appearing in myeloproliferative syndromes [10,11] and in solid tumors [13].…”
