The Function and Structure of Precuneus Is Associated With Subjective Sleep Quality in Major Depression

Abstract: BackgroundPoor sleep quality is related to depression. However, the investigation of the neural basis for poor sleep quality in individuals with major depression (MD) is limited.MethodsResting state functional and structural MRI data were derived from 114 MD individuals and 74 normal controls (NCs). Fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) and gray matter volume (GMV) were used to measure function and structure of the brain. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was performed to evaluate subje… Show more

“…It has been established that abnormal functional connectivity of the precuneus is associated with sleep quality ( Kay et al, 2016 ; Xia et al, 2022 ). The findings of this study suggest that the abnormal FC of the precuneus in ID may be related to sleep deprivation, consistent with previous research findings ( Wu et al, 2021 ; Ma and Zhang, 2022 ). Therefore, the aberrant FC changes in the NAc of ID could provide better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of ID and may have implications for the treatment of insomnia disorders.…”

“…Previous studies have found that spontaneous local neural activity in the precuneus decreases in people with depression 21,29 . Moreover, abnormal brain function activity in the precuneus has been associated with depression and poor sleep quality in some studies 30,31 . Based on these, we speculate that the increased temporal variability of local functional connectivity in the precuneus may be responsible for preventing depressive symptoms in CI patients.…”

“…Our study showed lower ReHo values in the precuneus and posterior cingulate gyrus in CRSwOD than in HC, and there was a negative relationship between ReHo values and QOD-NS in these two regions in Pearson correlation analysis in CRSwOD. This suggests that reduced olfactory input may lead to disturbances in regional brain activity in the precuneus and posterior cingulate gyrus, which are associated with low quality of life and depression ( Ma and Zhang, 2021 ; Zhu et al, 2022 ).…”
