The use of knowledge management in the context of sustainability has been increasingly important over the years. Despite this importance, it is observed that this area is still little explored and there are many possibilities of academic research. Following a structured research protocol, the authors of this article performed a systematic review of the literature and identified plausible gaps to be explored in the development of future research. These gaps are presented in relation to the themes, strategies, objectives and research approach. From the point of view of the themes, there are opportunities related to the study of sustainability in small and medium enterprises, in relation to the potential of universities as engines for the generation of knowledge and in concerning the insertion of knowledge management to propose guidelines for obtaining productive systems. Even though Knowledge Management (KM) is already widely used in business and public sector organisations, it also has potentially important implications when applied to the concept of sustainability. This research review aimed to examine the topography of research on KM and Sustainability. A total of 3025 articles from 1994 to 2018 were selected and analysed using bibliometric analysis to identify the growth trajectory of this literature, identify influential researchers and documents, explore the intellectual structure of the knowledge base and identify topical trends. The review found a knowledge of moderate but rapidly growing size. Key authors and documents were identified who can serve as guiding references for scholars entering this field of sustainability studies. Author co-citation analysis yielded a network map visualising the intellectual structure of this knowledge base which consisted of four Schools of Thought: Knowledge Management for Sustainability, Socio-Ecological System, Sustainability Science, KM for Sustainability Application. Keyword analysis highlighted climate change, learning, communities of practice and socio-economic management as topical trends emerging in the research front of this knowledge base. As the first bibliometric review of the KM and Sustainability literature, the findings from this paper establish a baseline for scholarship in this field which can be as a benchmark as the field continues to evolve in the future.

Sustainability indicators (SIs) are considered an important tool in Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), but their choice and management present shortcomings and must be improved. This work aimed to develop a governance model of SI systems for SEA. The study was carried out by means of documentary research on SEA reports and interviews with leaders of Brazilian SEA working teams, through the application of Content Analysis. The resulting framework, called G-SINDS, is composed of six phases and three transverse elements. Each phase represents a stage of construction of the SI system, with methodological procedures adaptable to the specificity of each SEA process. The transverse elements are factors that affect each phase, in order to perfect them. The G-SINDS represents an innovative model, since it involves the “life cycle of the indicators”, is directed to the SEA and is based on principles and techniques of knowledge management, constituting a means of improving the execution of SEA processes.
