The future of digital archive collections: Augmenting public service media geo-locative archives

Abstract: During 2011, the now defunct ABC Pool (abc.net.au/pool) project developed an experiment that sought to combine emerging augmented reality (AR) technology with the archival collection of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). The MyBurb project attempted to alter experiences of Australian suburbs by augmenting ABC archives in contemporary suburban environments to explore the blur between physical and digital spaces with its citizens. “…With AR being a form of mobile media, the types of content people call up about place are varied, whether they are about history (Hutchinson, 2015), tourism (Hofmann & Mosemghvdlishvili, 2014), art (Sheller, 2013), or other kinds of spatial information. “…The macro level would consider media content and media forms as a whole, with AR being a particular subset. Many AR studies focus on specific AR applications such as Pokémon GO (Colley et al, 2017; de Souza e Silva, 2017; Frith, 2017; Goggin, 2017; Kari, 2016), mobile browsers like Layar (Liao & Humphreys, 2015), or other AR projects like MyBurb (Hutchinson, 2015). There have also been a number of studies that have extended their work to types of AR content, most notably advertising (Liao, 2015; Yaoyuneyong et al, 2016) and education (Dunleavy et al, 2009; Martín-Gutiérrez et al, 2010; Yuen et al, 2011).…”
