The General Motor Ability Hypothesis: An Old Idea Revisited

Abstract: While specific motor abilities have become a popular explanation for motor performance, the older, alternate notion of a general motor ability should be revisited. Current theories lack consensus, and most motor assessment tools continue to derive a single composite score to represent motor capacity. In addition, results from elegant statistical procedures such as higher order factor analyses, cluster analyses, and Item Response Theory support a more global motor ability. We propose a contemporary model of gen… Show more

“…The theory of General Motor Ability (GMA) capability was inferred from the performance of movement skills or tasks (locomotor, object control, and body management skills), and strengthened by movement skill foundations (such as flexibility, balance, reaction time, strength, muscle power, etc.) (Hands et al, 2018). This model reminds us that we must consider individual factors, environmental factors, and task factors understand motor development.…”

“…One important final consideration, raised by our reviewers, is that the MABC-2 performance test implicitly assumes that there are three distinct underlying (i.e., latent) domains of movement ability (manual dexterity, aiming & catching, balance) along with one overall, or general movement ability [ 17 18 ]. In this manuscript, we have focused primarily on the raw data and the analysis of movement across the three domains of movement performance, the 8 test items, and 21 individual trials across both hands and legs.…”

“…Whether and how these individual test items should be combined into one or more domain-specific or general movement ability scores is beyond the scope of the present report, but represents a critically-important challenge for the MABC-2 that is also relevant for other movement assessments such as the BOT. Meeting this challenge will likely require further development of statistical methods and models using, for example, item response theory, the use of Rasch analysis, and ‘person-independent’ calibration of performance test items [ 15 , 17 18 ]. Whichever statistical approach is used to measure children’s movement ability, the theoretical models will be constrained or influenced by the quality and distribution of the raw performance data they are based upon.…”
