The generalizability of the structure of substance abuse and antisocial behavioral syndromes: A systematic review

Abstract: Although the externalizing spectrum model is a promising angle for future research and treatment, extending research on this model in a higher diversity of populations is recommended to enhance the understanding and applicability of the externalizing spectrum model.

“…The comorbidity between these disorders is high, and both substance abuse and disorders, such as antisocial personality disorder and conduct disorder, are currently conceptualized as expressions of a single externalizing spectrum of psychiatric disorders (e.g. Krueger & Markon, 2006;see APA, 2015 andSoe-Agnie et al, 2018). In the externalizing spectrum model, substance abuse and aggressive/antisocial behavior are considered to fall under an overall tendency to engage in antisocial impulsive behaviors.…”

“…In the externalizing spectrum model, substance abuse and aggressive/antisocial behavior are considered to fall under an overall tendency to engage in antisocial impulsive behaviors. The externalizing spectrum approach to substance abuse and antisocial behavioral disorders has been adopted in the DSM-5 psychiatric classification system (APA, 2015), although little research has been done on this concept in clinical populations (Soe-Agnie et al, 2018). More recently, the Externalizing Spectrum model was adopted in the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) model (Kotov et al, 2017;Krueger et al, 2018).…”

“…Nevertheless, drug use and problems related to consumption, such as money debts, cravings, and withdrawal [70], may lead to an increase in impulsive aggression. It has been hypothesised that impulsive aggression and drug use may be part of the same spectrum of externalising behaviour [40,71].…”

“…SUDs are highly comorbid with ASPD and are related to both aggression and criminal behaviour [38,39]. Although they represent two different nosological entities, some authors argue that SUDs may be part of the spectrum of antisocial behaviour [40]. Individuals with an SUD possess increased levels of impulsivity, which may be explained by the impact of abuse substances on the brain's structure and function as well as by previous individual vulnerability [41].…”

“…Taken together, the relationships between the use of illicit drugs and legally approved substances are complex and intertwined or mutually reinforcing [35,36]. They may be affected by the personal circumstances and environmental conditions of the abusers, and may cause other forms of behavioral maladjustment [17,37,38]. Nevertheless, our current understanding of this complicated phenomenon of substance abuse is limited, and so more cross-disciplinary research is again recommended.…”
