The Generation of K Indices from Digitally Recorded Magnetic Data

Abstract: Abstract. The K index was developed by Bartels and is a measure of geomagnetic activity. The important feature of this index is that it is a measure of solar activity superimposed on the regular daily variation. It is the most used estimate of activity being of particular interest to researchers in ionospheric physics and telecommunications. In response to increased availability of digital data from magnetic observatories and their demand by the scientific community it becomes desireable to check whether K indic… Show more

“…Many algorithms for the derivation of K indices from digital data have been proposed in recent years (Van Wijk & Nagtegaall977; Riddick &Stuart 1984;Hopgood 1986;Walker 1987;Wilson 1987;Jankowski et al 1988;Hattingh, Loubser & Nagtegaal 1989;Golovkov, Papitashvili & Papitashvili 1989;Pirjola, Ryno & Sucksdorff 1990). These algorithms have been tested with different data sets, and using different statistical tests.…”

“…A similar disk drive on the PDP 11/70 allows for data transfer to the main computer. The A3 X-Y flat-bed plotter is used to create reduced scale magnetograms of suitable quality for the monthly preliminary data books, and standardised scale value magnetograms for K index scaling (see Riddick and Stuart, 1984).…”
