There is a recent debate in the field of personality development whether and how personality traits can be modified or changed over short periods of time. Whereas traditional positions highlight the relative stability of personality traits in adulthood, recent research investigates intentional personality trait change, that is, desires and attempts to change personality traits. The main goal of the present article is to connect recent activities and intervention efforts in personality psychology with psychotherapy process-outcome research. More specifically, we argue that 4 empirically derived common change factors in psychotherapy research might provide some useful heuristic principles for personality change interventions in normal population that do not particularly suffer from personality disorders. We discuss the implications of the use of these principles to change personality traits and suggest some ideas for future research and practice. Hintergrund: Die kognitive Verhaltenstherapie (KVT) bei Depressionen wird in vielen, meist randomisierten kontrollierten Studien adressiert. Allerdings existieren kaum Studien, die spezifische KVT-Techniken im Rahmen der psychotherapeutischen Routineversorgung differenziell betrachten. Ziel dieser naturalistischen Studie war es, die Zusammenhänge zwischen der durch den Therapeuten beurteilten Anwendungsintensität depressionsspezifischer KVT-Techniken und dem Behandlungserfolg zu untersuchen. Patienten und Methoden: Depressionsspezifische KVT-Techniken an 109 ambulant behandelten depressiven Patienten wurden am Behandlungsende retrospektiv durch Therapeuten erfasst und regressionsanalytisch im Zusammenhang mit der Therapieresponse und Remission untersucht. Ergebnisse: Die Therapieeffektivität konnte in verschiedenen Outcome-Maßen mit mittleren bis großen Effektstärken nachgewiesen werden (0,50 ≤ d ≤ 1,2). Für die Therapeuteneinschätzungen der meisten KVT-Techniken zeigten sich robuste Zusammenhänge mit dem Behandlungserfolg. Dabei war vor allem eine als hoch eingeschätzte Intensität kognitiver Techniken mit der Response und Remission verbunden. Die Anwendung verhaltensaktivierender Techniken schien vor allem für das Erreichen einer Therapieresponse bedeutsam zu sein, während die Therapeutenurteile über Techniken zur Förderung sozialer und problemlösender Kompetenzen überwiegend mit der Remission assoziiert waren. Schlussfolgerung: Unter naturalistischen Bedingungen lassen sich positive Zusammenhänge zwischen retrospektiven Therapeuteneinschätzungen zu depressionsspezifischen KVT-Techniken und klinisch relevanten Therapieergebnissen nachweisen. Für eine weitere Validierung der Ergebnisse sollten in Folgestudien retrospektive und prospektive Therapeutenangaben kombiniert werden.
