The genus Macropiper (Piperaceae)*

Abstract: Macropiper, first proposed by Miquel in 1839, has often been submerged in the vast genus Piper L. A reconsideration based on ample material now available, however, indicates that it merits full generic status. It consists of nine species, distributed throughout the Pacific eastward from the Bonin, Marianas and New Hebrides Islands, Lord Howe Island and New Zealand to the Marquesas, Society and Austral Islands. Four of the species are divisible into formae, and several new nomenclatural combinations are require… Show more

“…A list of species sampled, along with collection localities, vouchers, and accession numbers is provided in Table 2. For members of segregate genera that do not have a valid synonym within Piper, the most current classification was used (e.g., Macropiper, Smith, 1975). For every species included, floral and inflorescence structure was documented using field-collected material, and the consistency of trait expression was verified in monographic treatments and herbarium collections.…”

“…10 species. A recent taxonomic revision suggests that the center of diversity of the /Macropiper is the Fijian archipelago, with six species total, three of them endemic to the region (Smith 1975). Many species of /Macropiper are used by indigenous people as remedies and the wide distribution in the South Pacific Islands may be a result of human introduction; however, no data are available to verify this hypothesis.…”

“…The native Kawakawa tree (Macropiper excelsum, Piperales: Piperaceae) is a common understory plant throughout the mixed native scrub environments of New Zealand [40]. The species is confined to coastal areas of the New Zealand mainland and a number of its offshore islands and reaches its southern limit at a latitude of 43846 0 S (Banks Peninsula) on the Pacific coast of New Zealand.…”
