The geography of scientific citations

Abstract: Science's main norms prescribe scientists to use citations as acknowledgements of cognitive content irrespective of geographical location. Previous studies, however, suggested that there is a considerable geographical bias in scientific citations. We argue that this geographical bias does not, in itself, falsify the notion that citations reflect acknowledgement of cognitive content, because cognitively related knowledge may be geographically concentrated as well. We analyse the role of organizational, regional… Show more

“…scientific paper features. Future research could use our model and predictors to examine citations dynamics in fields other than chemical engineering, or consider even more control variables, to account, for example, for the presence of sleeping beauties or for possible geographical biases (Wuestman et al 2019). Working with different citation timeframes, could reveal new factors impacting paper success.…”

“…Second, we evaluated whether the geographic and taxonomic biases apparent in the scientific literature in general (cf. Wilson et al 2007;Wuestman et al 2019) and invasion science in particular (Pyšek et al 2006;Pyšek et al 2008) were also apparent in the papers citing the frameworks. Our expectation was that the selected frameworks would be used across taxa as they were designed to be generally applicable.…”

“…Abramo, D'Angelo, and Carloni (2019) conceptualized the diffusion of knowledge between countries in terms of a "balance of knowledge flows" (BKF). Several studies investigated, among others, the role of geographic, cognitive and social proximity in knowledge diffusion (Jaffe, Trajtenberg, & Henderson, 1993;Hicks, Breitzman, Olivastro & Hamilton, 2001;Tijssen, 2001;Maurseth & Verspagen, 2002;Ahlgren, Persson, & Tijssen, 2013;Head, Li, & Minondo, 2018;Wuestman, Hoekman, & Frenken, 2019, Abramo, D'Angelo, & Di Costa, 2020a.…”
