The health benefits of autonomous vehicles: public awareness and receptivity in Australia

Abstract: These results suggest that the public may be interested in information relating to the individual and societal health benefits of autonomous vehicles, which in turn may increase overall support for this innovation. Implications for public health: Australians are likely to be receptive to autonomous vehicles when provided with information relating to their public health benefits.

“…Finally, people were found to be very concerned about legal issues, leaving decisions in others' hands, privacy issues, the risk of hacking, and lack of knowledge. These results are consistent with those found in Pettigrew, Talati & Norman (2018), suggesting that more positive attitudes toward AVs will be engendered by informing the public about the ways this transport innovation will improve the lives of individuals and enhance societal welfare. Results suggest that the public may be interested in information related to the individual and societal health benefits of autonomous vehicles, which in turn may increase overall support for this innovation.…”

“…Inadequate technological advancements may lead to serious consequences, especially in terms of loss of human life. This form of disruptive technology will need to be widely accepted by the community in order to facilitate the regulatory and behavioural adjustments required to achieve rapid adoption (Pettigrew, Talati & Norman, 2018).…”

“…For these benefits to be optimized, it is important for the conversion process to be efficient and timely (Pettigrew, 2017). It is argued that public sentiment towards AVs will be critical in determining how quickly they are adopted and hence the timeframe in which the anticipated benefits can be achieved (Hohenberger, Spörrle, & Welpe, 2016;Menon, Pinjari, Zhang, & Zou, 2016;Pettigrew, Talati, & Norman, 2018b).…”

“…In addition, the planning and regulatory context, plus the lack of scientific evidence leaves urban planners-along with legislators, urban managers, administrators, and policymakers-unprepared to deal with the possible spatial reorganization and social disruption of AVs. Many scholars foresee that the widespread use of AVs will likely result in accident reduction, congestion improvement, flexibility of time spent travelling, and transport-related social inclusion [39][40][41]. Other scholars stay dubious about the outcome due to the restricted understanding of how AVs will work effectively inside the prior complicated transportation system [42].…”
