“…Several researchers have employed inverted (Q) factor or cluster analytic techniques to empirically group individuals with similar profiles on various typing dimensions. The subjects of these investigations frequently have been lower-socioeconomicstatus men from a single state hospital or Veterans Administration treatment program (Bean & Karasievich, 1975;Goldstein & Linden, 1969;Nerviano, 1976;Skinner, Jackson, & Hoffman, 1974;Stein, Rozynko, & Pugh, 1971). As noted above, the typing dimensions usually have been personality variables (Lawlis & Rubin, 1971;Nerviano, 1976;Nerviano & Gross, 1973;Partington & Johnson, 1969;Skinner et al, 1974;Stein et al, 1971)-often from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI; Bean & Karasievich, 1975;Goldstein & Linden, 1969;Mogar, Wilson, & Helm, 1970;Whitelock, Overall, & Patrick, 1971).…”

Typically, the typology is related to few other variables, so the types remain relatively unelaborated, and the issues of their differential development and prognoses are not explored (but see Partington & Johnson, 1969).…”

“…The heterogeneity of personality amongst alcoholics has often been remarked upon (e.g. Syme, 1957;Stein et al, 1971) and recent research has tended to be directed towards the isolation of personality types amongst alcoholics (e.g. Partington & Johnson, 1969).…”
