The HLA‐B14 Cross‐Reactive Group

Abstract: The serological analysis of 24 HLA antisera, produced by pregnancy alone, containing B14 and up to six additional specificities was carried out on a selected lymphocyte panel of 316 cells. HLA typing was performed on the antiserum donors and 21 of their husbands. The results show (i) bidirectional cross‐reactivity between B8, B14.1, B14.2, B18 and Bw39: (ii) cross‐reactivity between antibodies to these specificities and Bw22 (probably Bw22.1 (Cw3 associated) only): (iii) confirmation, with five antisera, of th… Show more

“…Additionally, the B*14:05 and B*14:06 specificities have tenuously been reported as B65, suggesting that epitope 11AV, and motif 8, may play an important role in B65 identity (Table 3), although, in the absence of 97W, it seems likely that both B*14:05 and B*14:06 specificities will both appear as "short" HLA-B14, non-B64/B65. Epitopes 420, 66ITC, 116F, 131S+163T and 170RH and motifs 24 to 29 involve a range of HLA-B specificities (B8, B18, B37, B38, B39, B51, B52, B54 and B55) that are included in the serological HLA-B14 CREG (Darke, 1980b(Darke, , 1983. Thus, these epitopes/motifs give some credence to those early serological findings.…”

“…Variations in the B14 "common" determinant could affect the "availability" of a determinant shared by B14 and B38/B39 (allosteric effect (Schwartz et al 1979)). B8 and B39 stimulated antisera that cross-react with B14 are known to react preferentially with Bw65 and Bw64 cells, respectively (Darke 1980b). Differences in antibody binding area or different antibody contact points could also contribute to these findings.…”
