The hybrid elephant trunk procedure: A single-stage repair of an ascending, arch, and descending thoracic aortic aneurysm

Abstract: Surgical repair of extensive aortic aneurysms requires a two-stage approach. We present the case of a single-stage repair using a hybrid procedure. This case demonstrates the technical feasibility of repairing properly selected extensive aortic aneurysms in a single procedure.

“…There have been many reports describing surgical repair of ETAA by one stage [1][2][3][4] or staged repair [5][6][7][8], however, the optimal surgical strategy for ETAA remains unclear. Some patients also require concomitant treatment of coronary artery or heart valve disease, staged repair is likely to be performed to gain access to all parts of the thoracic aorta and cardiac structures.…”

“…In most situations, replacement of total-arch was the operation of choice for Debakey type Ⅰ aortic dissection, with a simultaneous use of stented-elephant trunk technique [2][3][4][5] . Open surgeries were performed in patients suffering from diseased descending aorta with involvement of important branches that entails re-implantation.…”

“…Since other operative techniques were well described, total arch replacements in combination with stented-elephant trunk technique [3][4][5] were detailed in this article. Patients were anesthetized under endotracheal general anesthesia.…”
