“…Poplar mosaic virus (PMV, cryptogram ''"/"": */'•': E/E : S/'-') is widespread in poplars in Europe (see BIDDLE and TINSLEY 1971a and b, SCHMELZER 1966, MiLiNKo and SCHMELZER 1966, BERG 1964. BERG (1964) reported, as personal communications from other workers, that PMV occurs in Canada, USA and Japan but evidence of the presence of the virus (other than symptoms) was only obtained in Canada, in one clone of poplars of German origin (NAVRATIL and BOYER 1968). A disease called necrotic leaf spot of aspen has also been described by BOYER (1962) and BOYER and NAVRATIL (1970) in Canada; the authors considered that it was probably not caused by PMV.…”
