The identification of poplar mosaic virus in Canada

Abstract: An important disease of poplar in Europe caused by the poplar mosaic virus is reported as occurring on Poplar deltoides ssp. angulata in Canada. In all characteristics studied the virus appears identical with the European form.

BERG (1964) reported, as personal communications from other workers, that PMV occurs in Canada, USA and Japan but evidence of the presence of the virus (other than symptoms) was only obtained in Canada, in one clone of poplars of German origin (NAVRATIL and BOYER 1968). A disease called necrotic leaf spot of aspen has also been described by BOYER (1962) and BOYER and NAVRATIL (1970) in Canada; the authors considered that it was probably not caused by PMV.…”
