The Immunohistochemical Evaluation of Estrogen Receptor-α and Progesterone Receptors of Normal, Hyperplastic, and Neoplastic Endometrium in 88 Pet Rabbits

Abstract: Abstract. The expression of estrogen receptor-a (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) in normal, hyperplastic, and neoplastic endometrium in rabbits was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The tissues evaluated were 27 normal uteri, 19 cases with endometrial hyperplasia, and 42 adenocarcinomas. Sixteen of 27 cases of normal uteri (59.3%) and 13 out of 19 hyperplasias (68.4%) stained positive with both ER-a and PR. Adenocarcinomas were further subdivided into 26 papillary and 16 tubular/solid adenocarcinomas. Papi… Show more

“…Increased ER-a and PR expression were found to be correlated with a better prognosis in canine mammary tumours [25,26]. In rabbits with uterine adenocarcinoma, however, expression of ER-a and PR did not reflect prognosis, despite varying hormone receptor expression playing a role in the development of two different types of tumours, papillary or tubular [27]. The discrepancies identified suggest that the usefulness of these receptors as markers may be species and/or tumour type dependent.…”

“…Ten slides from each animal group were evaluated for p16 and ERα expression by two blinded independent evaluators. The area labeled with specific antibody and the percentage of cells positive for the antigen were calculated using published procedures [22]. The evaluation of immunostaining of ERα and p16 was performed on both the stromal and epithelial components, but only statistical analysis of the stromal regions were reported.…”

“…Variations in the immunoreactivity of smooth muscle tumors to SMA and Desmin might be related to the degree of differentiation of each tumor (Cooper and Valentine, 2002). A variety of exogenous and endogenous hormones can influence the mitotic index and the development of tumor cell necrosis (Asakawa et al, 2008).…”
