The impact of abandoned/disused marble quarries on avifauna in the anticline of Estremoz, Portugal: does quarrying add to landscape biodiversity?

Abstract: Although the extractive operations of quarrying are often considered environmental threats, there is some evidence that abandoned quarries may have a significant positive impact on biodiversity by enhancing habitat quality for several species. In Estremoz Anticlinal, SE Portugal, many of the existing marble quarries have been inactive for decades and were abandoned without any restoration project in progress. The impact of quarry abandonment on avifauna diversity was assessed relative to reference conditions u… Show more

“…For example, agriculture and mining affect aquatic ecosystems through soil erosion, leading to changes in species abundance and composition (Alin et al, 2002 ; Shearer & Young, 2011 ). Stone quarries have a unique morphology and mineral content that generate new habitats, favored by some plant and wildlife species (Germano et al, 2016 ; Telea et al, 2019 ).…”

“…За рахунок цього вiдбувається вселення рослин i тварин iз навколишнiх прилеглих територiй. Подiбнi процеси часто можна спостерiгати як на вапнякових кар'єрах [3,6,7,12], так i на iнших каменедобувних пiдприємствах [4,10,13].…”

“…Загалом заселення вiдбувається за рахунок видiв, притаманних бiотопам саме тiєї мiсцевостi, де розташований кар'єр [3,13,14]. Але кар'єри можуть чинити i додатковий позитивний вплив на збагачення мiсцевої орнiтофауни, створюючи новi мiсця для гнiздування багатьох видiв [4]. Специфiчнi умови рельєфу кар'єрiв можуть приваблювати тi види птахiв, якi є нетиповими для даної мiсцевостi (наприклад, скельнi види) [10].…”
