The impact of dental restorations’ quality on caries risk

Abstract: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the quality of government funded restorations can impact caries prevalence. After randomisation, One hundred thirty five (135) 12-13-year-old children were examined in the Gulbene municipality of Latvia and 175 restorations placed in premolars or second molars were evaluated. It was concluded that the quality of restorations made by publicly funded dentistry is low, which could be a reason for secondary caries and other complications and results in greate… Show more

“…The collection of unstimulated whole saliva (UWS) procedure was carried out according to the Navazesh method and between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to decrease the circadian effect [Dawes, 1972;Navazesh, 1993]. The buffering capacity and pH of the collected UWS were assessed using the Saliva-Check buffer and pH test strips (GC, Japan) according to Ericsson's technique [Maldupa et al, 2011].…”

“…Saliva buffering capacity was calculated using a modification of Maldupa method. 18 The initial pH of the saliva sample was measured with a pH meter (Jenway pH meter PHS 25) before the measurement of buffering capacity (Picture 2). Buffering capacity measurement www.njdres.com involved titrating 0.1 ml of 0.01 M Hydrochloric acid (HCl) into 2.5mls of saliva using a precise burette (Picture 3), the solution was mixed gently and left to settle for five seconds, then the pH was re-measured.…”
