The Impact of Economic Growth on Gender Specific Unemployment in the EU

Abstract: The relationship between unemployment and economic growth is known as Okun´s Law. Okun´s Law is used to estimate the reaction of unemployment rate on change in GDP growth. The purpose of this paper is therefore to examine the possibly asymmetric relationship between changes in output and gender specific unemployment rates by estimating Okun´s coefficients for all countries of the EU, as well as for selected groups of the EU countries. These groups include countries with similar characteristics that differ from… Show more

“…For more than 20 out of 28 countries we found greater male than female unemployment responsiveness to GDP movements above and below potential levels. Here, our estimates correspond to Brincikova and Darmo (2015), as well as Dunsch's (2016) results about higher male unemployment sensitivity to the business cycle than women but, again, if we take confidence intervals (see Appendix B) into consideration, the conclusion is not so obvious anymore.…”

“…Other researchers have run panel regressions. Brincikova and Darmo (2015) analysed how male and female unemployment responds to output fluctuations in a panel of the EU 28 countries and selected groups (the core countries, PIIGS, Northern countries and the Visegrad group). In the panel of European countries, Banerji et al (2014Banerji et al ( , 2015 focused on the Okun's coefficient for youth, and Marconi et al (2016) for different age cohorts.…”

“…Dell'Anno and Solomon (2008) Studies were further extended to gender. A gender specification unemployment study was conducted by Brincikova and Darmo (2015) by employing annual year based data for the period of 2000-2013. The aim of this study was to identify the asymmetric relationship between change in output and unemployment by estimating Okun's coefficient in EU countries, as well as for selected group of EU countries.…”

“…Bod'a and Povazanova (2015) established minimal different responses of male and female unemployment to output changes in Greece. Brincikova and Darmo (2015) also suggested that the sensitivity of male and female unemployment to output changes is more similar in countries with lower economic performance, as in Greece.…”
