The Impact of Harvesting Time on Fusarium Mycotoxins in Spring Wheat Grain and Their Interaction with Grain Quality

Abstract: In this work, we studied the impact of harvesting time on Fusarium mycotoxin occurrence in spring wheat and the effect of mycotoxin contamination on the quality of these grains. The spring wheat grains (Triticum aestivum L.) were collected in 2016–2018 when the crop had reached full maturity, 10 ± 2 days and 17 ± 3 days after full maturity. The grain samples were analyzed for Fusarium infection and co-contamination with mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEA), and T-2 toxin (T-2), as well as the qua… Show more

“…Other research also supports a negative correlation between the AFL B1+B2+G1+G2 and moisture content (Walker et al, 2018). However, more studies (Garcia-Cela et al, 2018;Kochiieru et al, 2021;Janavičienė et al, 2022) were carried out using other types of grains and flours to…”

“…A significant effect of precipitation at flowering on the DON level has been demonstrated in many studies [7,45,65,71]. According to Kochiieru et al [33], the amount of precipitation around flowering, and at 20-30 days before and 20 days after, is the most important factor for DON contamination of spring wheat grain in Lithuania. Rainy weather during the 2017 harvesting period in Lithuania also resulted in high DON contamination of spring wheat grain, to levels that were several-fold higher than the maximum permissible value set by EU regulations [33].…”
