The Impact of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy on Non-AIDS-Defining Cancers among Adults with AIDS

Abstract: Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has dramatically reduced the incidence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and increased AIDS survival time, but little is known about its impact on cancer. Data from adults in the San Francisco, California, AIDS surveillance registry were computer matched with the California Cancer Registry. Age-, sex-, and race-adjusted standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were computed, and proportional hazards models evaluated the effect of HAART use on cancer incidence… Show more

“…21,22 HIV Approximately 37 000 new cases of HIV were reported in the United States in 2006. 5 Hessol et al 7 identified more than 14 000 adults diagnosed with AIDS in San Francisco between 1990 and 2001 and identified 482 non-AIDSdefining cancers in the 60 months before or after the diagnosis of AIDS was made. They reported 32 cases of PCa and found significantly increased standardized incidence ratios of PCa when compared to the general population (SIR ¼ 1.7).…”

“…The ultimate influence of the partial immune reconstitution and improved survival made possible by HAART on the risk of ICC and non-AIDS-defining cancers, notably HL, anal and liver cancer is, however, still unclear (Herida et al, 2003;Clifford et al, 2005;Dal Maso et al, 2005;Biggar et al, 2006;Engels et al, 2006;Hessol et al, 2007;Patel et al, 2008).…”
