The impact of Industry 4.0 on the relationship between TPM and maintenance performance

Abstract: PurposeIn this paper, the authors examine the impact of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies on the relationship between total productive maintenance (TPM) practices and maintenance performance.Design/methodology/approachData collection was carried out through a multinational survey with 318 respondents from different manufacturing companies located in 15 countries. Multivariate data techniques were applied to analyze the collected data. Diffusion of innovations theory (DIT) was the adopted theoretical lens for ou… Show more

“…In fact, the moderating role played by I4.0 technologies on the impact of certain managerial approaches has already been evidenced by some studies (e.g. Tortorella et al, 2019bTortorella et al, , 2022b.…”

“…The adoption of IoT, big data, cloud computing, and wireless sensors seemed to be more extensive in companies that prioritize production volume, such as mass customization or repetitive production strategies. According to the classification empirically validated by Tortorella et al (2022), IoT, big data, cloud computing, and wireless sensors are I4.0 technologies that aim at sensing and communicating data among machines, people, and products, although not necessarily implying action-taking. In companies whose manufacturing strategy preconizes high volumes, manufacturing processes tend to be constantly running, generating large amount of data.…”

“…As consolidated in Table 2, the citation of nine technologies has been relatively frequent, which suggests a consensus among researchers about the main portfolio of I4.0 technologies. It is also worth mentioning that these technologies have been combined differently and their classification varied in terms of their focus of application (Rossini et al, 2021), role within the organization (Tortorella et al, 2022), and importance (Frank et al, 2019). Although the digital transformation involves several aspects, most studies generally utilize the adoption level of these I4.0 technologies as a proxy to assess the digitalization efforts of organizations (Rossini et al, 2019).…”
