The objective of the study is to analyze the effect of mothers’ knowledge before and after counseling on nutrition and protein intake in stunting toddlers aged 12-36 months. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest-posttest design from May to August 2022 in Batujajar and Cihampelas Subdistricts, West Bandung Regency, Indonesia. Subjects consisted of 124 mothers who had stunted toddlers and were divided into 2 groups: control and treatment, with 62 toddlers each, with simple random sampling. In the 1st and 4th months, nutritional measurements of protein intake were carried out using the Food Frequency Questionnaire using the 2007 Nutrisurvey software. The statistical analysis included a t-test (comparison) for each pair of variables and tests for independence using the correlation coefficient and chi-square. Pretest nutrition knowledge in the majority control group was in the sufficient category at 38.7%. Meanwhile, in the treatment group, it was in the good category at 54.8%. Nutrition knowledge showed that the posttest control (15.45 ± 3.55) and the treatment (18.53 ± 1.49) groups were significantly different (p <0.01). Protein intake pretest and posttest (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th month protein) between the control and treatment groups were also significantly different (p<0.05). There was a significant posttest effect on mother's knowledge about nutrition and protein intake in stunted toddlers. Health workers are expected to continue to provide health education gradually and repeatedly to increase mothers' knowledge so the risk of stunting can be minimized.

Background: Posyandu program suspension due to COVID-19 has resulted in a decrease in monitoring children’s growth, leading to undetected problems. Understanding mothers' eating behavior plays a crucial role in preventing malnutrition, we must continue the program as a health promotion medium to enhance mothers' understanding and track children's growth and development. Objectives: This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of virtual Posyandu program in strengthening cadre health promotion services for nutritionally vulnerable children in Jember Regency agricultural area during the absence of offline Posyandu. Methods: The research was carried out September 2022-January 2023, implementing a 21-day intervention on 169 respondents from Puskesmas Arjasa and Paleran (representing two different socio-cultures). The cadres utilized the application to enhance children's nutritional health and instruct parents on its usage. The success parameter is that there were significant differences between the growth and development of children pre- and post-program. Growth variables were assessed by measuring nutritional status according to Ministry-of-Health Regulation, before and after the intervention, while development variables were assessed using a Developmental Pre-Screening questionnaire (DPSQ). Results: The virtual Posyandu program in both Puskesmas demonstrated significant differences (p<0.001) in children's growth and development parameters, such as height-for-age, weight-for-height, and DPSQ, between the pre- and post-program periods. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the program has effectively maintained children's growth and development. Conclusions: Balitagrow© Android-based application in virtual Posyandu program effectively maintained children’s growth and development in pandemic era and worth continuing to be developed according to user needs.

Socioeconomic as Stunting Predictor on Children Aged 24-59 Months at Before and During Covid-19 Pandemic

Background: Stunting is a high-priority malnutrition problem globally. The COVID-19 pandemic was predicted to increase hunger and worsen the condition of stunted children. Purpose: To determine the socioeconomic factors for stunting in children aged 24-59 months before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Magelang Regency. Methods: This study used a case-control design from August to November 2021. Subjects were children under five aged 24-59 months from the Magelang Regency. The subjects consisted of 162 stunted children and 166 normal children. The nutritional status screening was derived from e-PPGBM data, and was further validated through repeated anthropometric measurements. Phone interviews with mothers or trustees were done to obtain primary data. Data were analyzed using a chi-square test and declared significant if the p-value was below 0.05. Results: Socioeconomic status factors significantly related to stunting before the COVID-19 pandemic were family income below the region’s minimum wage (cOR = 2.18; 95% CI = 1.31-3.64), incapability to fulfill food and household needs (cOR = 2; 95% CI = 1.25-3.23), and incapability to save income (cOR = 2; 95% CI = 1.32-3.33). During the COVID-19 pandemic, a socioeconomic factor that was found to be significantly related to stunting was incapability to fulfill food and household needs (cOR = 1.57; 95% CI = 1-2.46). Conclusion: Low family income and incapability to fulfill food and household needs was strongly associated with stunting. Improvements to community empowerment and stunting prevention programs in response to COVID-19 need to be made to prevent new stunting cases.
