Purpose Lean management tools are becoming increasingly applied in different types of organizations around the world. These tools have shown their significant contribution to improving business performance. In this vein, the purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of lean management on both occupational safety and operational excellence in Tunisian companies. Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted among Tunisian companies, and it resulted in the collection of 62 responses that were analyzed using the software SPSS. In addition, a conceptual model linking the practices of the three basic concepts was designed to highlight the hypotheses of the research. Subsequently, factor analysis and structural equation method analysis were conducted to assess the validation of the assumptions. Findings The results obtained have shown that lean management has a significant impact on occupational safety. Similarly, occupational safety has a significant impact on operational excellence. However, lean management does not have a significant impact on operational excellence. Originality/value This work highlighted the involvement of small and medium-sized enterprise’s managers from emerging economies in the studied concepts’ practices. Likewise, it testified to the impacts of lean management on occupational safety and operational excellence in the Tunisian context.

The literature presents a review of the current application of lean and green practices and highlights the context, barriers, drivers, tools, and critical success factors and tools for the integration of lean and green practices within the Sub-Saharan African (SSA) manufacturing industry. In addition, the current state, gaps in the existing literature, and future perspectives on the current challenges of the industry have been suggested for the integration of both paradigm and sustainability of the industry. Integration of lean-green provides means to addressing issues faced by manufacturing industries for improved competitiveness. This study demonstrates that the application of lean and green practice is critical to be identified and applied within the region through the analysis of research papers published in both operational and sustainability journals. The findings of this review indicate that the synergy of lean and green practices is an effective initiative for resolving the operational and sustainability challenges of the manufacturing industry within SSA. To achieve operational excellence and mitigate environmental concerns, industries must implement the right tools and consider the critical success factors. By applying appropriate tools and models, the SSA region can address the current challenges and achieve a reduction in cost significantly.

PurposeLean implementation has become popular over the past three decades in the industry and is becoming more prevalent in, service organizations. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of social and technical Lean practices on sustainable performance (i.e. economic, environmental and social) in service organizations.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology includes the analysis of global results obtained from 139 managers from the service sector.FindingsThe results demonstrate that Lean practices have a positive effect on the three perspectives of sustainable performance, regardless of the company size and duration of Lean implementation. Furthermore, both social and technical Lean practices have a similar impact on environmental and economic performance, but their impact on social performance differs, since social Lean practices have a stronger impact on social performance.Practical implicationsThis study has a significant contribution to Lean practitioners in service sectors, as it demonstrates that efforts to apply Lean practices can benefit economic results as well as environmental and social performance.Originality/valueMajority of existing studies focused on the isolated impact of Lean on one of the triple bottom line performance aspects and with a scarcity of studies within the context of services. The intersection of these three strategic areas – Lean, sustainability and services – has not been extensively addressed. There is also a lack of studies that observe sustainability in environmental, social and economic performance, mainly in the service sector.
