The impact of mangrove damage on tidal flooding in the subdistrict of Tugu, Semarang, Central Java

Abstract: Expansion of industrial areas, aquaculture, settlements, and limited knowledge of the community about the function of mangroves allegedly led to the conversion of mangrove functions in the early 1990s. This study aimed to map the condition of mangroves from 1988, 1990, 1995, 2008, to 2021 and their effect on the widespread of tidal flooding in three villages (Mangkang Kulon, Mangunharjo, Mangkang Wetan) in Tugu subdistrict, Semarang City. “…The review above shows that coastal areas play an important role in national development because they are the main sector that promotes economic growth and controls ecosystem balance. Various economic activities that are currently widely developed in coastal areas, including tourism, transportation, pond cultivation, and fishing, and support for the oil and gas offshore mining sector often cause conflicts of interest, leading to socio-economic, institutional, and ecological problems (Utami et al, 2021;Analuddin et al, 2023). This review shows that the lack of trust, support, and community inclusion in coastal management are the dominant factors of program failure (Yamindago, 2015;Dalimunthe, 2018;Eddy et al, 2021;Damastuti et al, 2022).…”

“…[8] said that aquaculture activities had caused damage to mangroves over the past two decades. [9] stated that the damage to mangroves in Semarang correlated with the widespread tidal flooding that submerged settlements, ponds, and agricultural land. The impact of climate change and sea level rise is also known to influence the degradation of mangrove ecosystems considerably [10] [11] [12].…”
