The Impact of Metronomic Adjuvant Chemotherapy in Patients with Advanced Oral Cancer

Abstract: The result of tegafur-uracil treatment in patients with advanced oral cancer showed significant improvement in the 5-year OS, DFS, and DSS rate, while also showing a decreased distant metastasis rate. Tegafur-uracil treatment is a useful, effective, and well-tolerated anticancer treatment for advanced oral cancer.

“…Oral cancer (OC) is one of the most widely prevalent head and neck cancers, characterized by high mortality rates, low long‐term survival, and increasing incidence in the developing than developed countries 1,2. Surgical resection and chemoradiotherapy are considered as the most important treatment method for OC3,4,5; however, the 5‐year survival after surgical resection was still poor 6-11. It is important to find accurate clinical staging and identification of prognostic factors for estimating prognosis and selecting appropriate treatment modalities 12,13,14,15…”

“…Patients with locally-advanced diseases, unresectable tumors, or patients at high risk, post-operation, are often treated with RT [ 9 ]. The concurrent administration of chemotherapy during the RT course has been reported to significantly improve overall, disease-specific, and disease-free survival rates [ 10 , 11 ]. Although the toxicity of combination modality therapy remains higher than that of chemotherapy, RT alone can also lead to significant oral complications and profoundly influence patients’ quality of life [ 12 ].…”

“…Notably, early metastases do not generally shown a disseminated pattern—making them potentially amenable to local salvage attempts (e.g., metastatectomy or stereotactic body radiotherapy) 37,38 . Besides being a simple screening tool for early DM, NLR may potentially serve as a biomarker to stratify the allocation of patients with locally advanced OSCC to treatment intensification strategies (posttreatment metronomic adjuvant chemotherapy) 39 …”
