Purpose This study aims to examine the impact of information overload (referred to as the saddling effect in this study) of underlying contracts on the sales performance of the salesforce at takaful institutions with special reference to addressing the heterogeneous effect among distribution channels. Design/methodology/approach A total of 311 samples were collected from the sales professionals of the takaful industry in Malaysia using a purposive sampling technique and the empirical analysis was conducted with the measures of model fit and bootstrapping technique using partial least square structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis. Findings Empirical results indicate that the saddling effect of the underlying contracts is evident among salesforce and the magnitude of the impact was found to be heterogeneous between the groups of salesforces in different distribution channels. Practical implications Findings recommend respective authorities of takaful institutions to intensify capacity building for their salesforce, particularly in the area of shariah knowledge and nature of underlying Islamic contracts used in the takaful products. A significant heterogeneous effect between distribution channels suggests that the actions and policy formulations should be diverse between the salesforce at different distribution channels and higher attention should be catered for the salesforce at the direct selling channel. Originality/value The increased information expectation (i.e. underlying contract knowledge) on takaful salesforce and its impact on their sales performance have not been documented before. The increase in information may create a burdening effect or what is referred to in this study as the information or knowledge “saddling effect.” If a saddling effect is identified, this may be a formidable reason for the slowing growth of the takaful industry in the respective market. It is expected that the outcome of this study would assist not only to fill the gap in the literature of personnel selling in the takaful industry but also will assist the takaful institutions in formulating appropriate policies for tackling the issue of the saddling effect of underlying contracts.

Purpose Islamic banking and finance (IBF) have been the subject of central scientific interest, as demonstrated by the significant increase in publications on the subject in recent years. In the present paper, the use of the bibliometric analytical technique is proposed to examine the research on IBF. The purpose of this study is to carry out a bibliometric analysis of all the publications on Scopus relative to IBF. Design/methodology/approach The screening methodology conducted in May 2020, in the foreground, for precise research and as complete as possible, sought all references to “Islamic finance” or “Islamic bank” in “all fields” of Scopus and 7,662 scientific contributions were found. Therefore, the results include a time frame for publications between 1980 and 2020. Findings This study shows that the literature on Islamic finance focusses on banking, rates, comparisons with traditional banks and portfolios, analysis of governance and control structures. In the journals taken into consideration in this paper from which the sample of selected articles comes, it can be deduced that the ethicality of the finance and the bank is placed in second place. Originality/value Through analysis, citation rates are proposed, and the impact factors of journals are quantitative and objective indicators directly linked to published science. The implications of this paper are to identify the future trend of research in the field of IBF.

This article aims to examine the Roadmap that has been published by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) for the expansion of Islamic banking in Indonesia in the next five years. In particular, it seeks to analyze the main pillars that the Roadmap has identified to further the progress of Islamic banking in Indonesia. These pillars are strengthening the identity of Islamic banking, synergizing the Islamic economic ecosystem, and strengthening licensing, regulation, and supervision. This study applies a qualitative method to analyze the implementation of the 2020-2025 Islamic banking development roadmap. The data was analyzed using taxonomic analysis techniques method, that conducts not only a general exploration but also focuses on a particular domain in accordance with the research focus of the researcher. Because this research is qualitative in nature, the data was interpreted based on the content review system. The paper finds that the use of technology is one of the most important tools to achieve the three pillars of Islamic banking in Indonesia. Having the full support of all Islamic banking stakeholders is also another important factor that will further progress the industry. The analysis of the Islamic banking Roadmap provides an overview on the key pillars that have been identified as drivers for the future of Islamic banking in Indonesia. This will provide important knowledge to industry players, the academic and other stakeholder to understand the direction that the industry will be taking in the next five years so that they can collaborate effectively to support the progress of the industry. The analysis of the 2020-2025 Islamic banking development roadmap is a first in the existing literature. A critical analysis of this recently released document by the OJK in 2021 is deemed important to elucidate the future direction of the Islamic banking industry to stakeholders in Indonesia.
