The Importance of Cytokinins during Reproductive Development in Arabidopsis and Beyond

Abstract: Fertilization and seed formation are fundamental events in the life cycle of flowering plants. The seed is a functional unit whose main purpose is to propagate the plant. The first step in seed development is the formation of male and female gametophytes and subsequent steps culminate in successful fertilization. The detailed study of this process is highly relevant because it directly impacts human needs, such as protecting biodiversity and ensuring sustainable agriculture to feed the increasing world populat… Show more

“…ABC transporters may play a role in floral scent production in Brassica, as recently shown for Petunia [41], a trait under strong selection in the study of Gervasi and Schiestl [10]. Interestingly, the cytokinins encoded by LONELY GUY (like LOG1 and LOG3 in our results) are known for their importance in reproductive development in Arabidopsis [42]. Some candidate genes are also involved in pectin synthesis and pollen tube growth (GALT6, 43).…”

“…As long as subsequent developmental processes are successful, promoting ovule initiation will lead to increased number of effective offspring. Most positive regulators of ovule initiation, including developmental signals ( ANT , HLL , LUG , SEU , SIN2 , STK ) and hormone signals (auxin, CK, and BR), also positive regulate subsequent ovule development processes and increase offspring number (Schneitz et al, 1998; Broadhvest et al, 2000; Liu et al, 2000; Azhakanandam et al, 2008; Gomez et al, 2016; Hu et al, 2018; Jia et al, 2020; Terceros et al, 2020; Cucinotta et al, 2021; Cai et al, 2022). However, the function of GA in ovule initiation and seed development is complicated.…”

“…It is likely, however, that both, the LTMH pollen phenotype in the wild type and the increased tolerance in the low-SA line involve interaction between multiple hormones. In addition to JA, SA, auxin, and ABA have all been implicated in pollen development ( Cardarelli and Cecchetti, 2014 ; Feng et al, 2018 ; Yao et al, 2018 ; Rezaul et al, 2019 ; Terceros et al, 2020 ). Furthermore, multiple hormones are associated with cell division ( Shimotohno et al, 2021 ), carbohydrate metabolism ( Eveland and Jackson, 2012 ), and the heat shock response ( Snyman and Cronjé, 2008 ; Carranco et al, 2010 ; Huang et al, 2016 ; Tian et al, 2020 ; Li et al, 2021 ).…”
