The Important Role of Carbohydrates in the Flavor, Function, and Formulation of Oral Nutritional Supplements

Abstract: Patients who are malnourished or at-risk for malnutrition often benefit from the consumption of oral nutritional supplements (ONS). ONS supply a range of micro- and macro-nutrients, and they can be used to supplement a diet or provide total nutrition. Since ONS are specially formulated products, all ONS ingredients—including carbohydrates—are added ingredients. This may seem to be at odds with the growing public health discourse on the need to reduce “added sugars” in the diet. However, carbohydrate is an esse… Show more

“…Therefore, changes in carbohydrates content, as affected by nano-urea treatments suggest a direct effect of the product on the mushroom texture and firmness. Carbohydrate is an essential nutrient for human health, and an efficient source of energy for the human body 56 . However, values of carbohydrates, total protein, fat, and crude fiber contents obtained in nano-urea treated cases were lower than those reported earlier on substrates supplemented by various protein-rich additives 57 .…”

“…A similar result was found in PD patients that appendicular muscle mass reduced with less protein and energy intaking (Zou et al, 2015). Carbohydrate, a primary source of energy, from ONS can help to meet the daily energy need for a person, prevented body from using endogenous sources of energy, such as lean body mass and restored positive energy balance to increase the anabolism of protein (Kokkinidou et al., 2018). This may explain the effect of a mixture of macronutrients on lean body mass.…”
