The induction of stress proteins in three marine Vibrio during carbon starvation

Abstract: The induction of DnaK and GroEL homologous proteins by heat‐shock and long‐term carbon starvation was studied in Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio sp. strain S14, and Vibrio sp. strain DW1. In each Vibrio strain one protein (60 kDa) reacted with antibodies against Escherichia coli‐GroEL and two proteins, DnaK (69 kDa) and Sis1 (62‐60 kDa), reacted with antibodies against E. coli‐Dnak. The carbon starvation elicited induction of the stress proteins was strain‐specific, suggesting that the induction of stress proteins l… Show more

“…It responds to multiplenutrient starvation by a developmental process comprising the temporally ordered induction of more than 66 starvationinduced (Sti) proteins (39). The identities of the Sti proteins are, with some exceptions (17), unknown, but it is assumed that phenotypic adaptations during the starvation response can be ascribed to the induction of specific Sti proteins. That is the case with Escherichia coli, in which several of the phenotypes that are expressed during stationary phase are dependent on specific members of the as or RpoS regulon (14).…”

“…As a gram‐negative, non‐spore forming bacterium, S4 did not survive spray drying procedures commonly used to formulate gram‐positive bacteria such as Bacillus spp. Our novel approach to the formulation of this bacterium takes advantage of prior knowledge in the mechanisms allowing planktonic marine bacteria to survive in the oligotrophic conditions sometimes observed in coastal and oceanic waters (Holmquist et al., 1993; Nelson et al., 1997). The novelty of the formulated S4 for applications in commercial aquaculture is that it is easily delivered as a live, actively metabolising bacteria in a liquid medium.…”
