The Influence of 2-Year Changes in Physical Activity, Maturation, and Nutrition on Adiposity in Adolescent Youth

Abstract: The aim of this longitudinal study was to explore temporal patterns of physical activity (PA) and adiposity in Spanish adolescents. Eighty healthy adolescents were followed over a 2-year period (42 girls and 38 boys). A PA score was estimated using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A). Adiposity was assessed by anthropometric measurements; body mass index (BMI) and fat mass percent (FMP) were calculated using standard equations. Sexual maturity was estimated by percentage of predicted ad… Show more

“…To compute the physical activity index score, the average value of all responses (higher scores indicate higher levels of physical activity) was calculated. The physical activity recommendations were categorized based on a cut-off score of 2.75 points to discriminate between "active" and "non-active" adolescents [ 37 ].…”

“…In spite of the fact that in the systematic review of Bacil et al [30] there is an association between biological maturation and physical activity, the maturation of the participating girls was not assessed to reduce the stress and embarrassment of adolescents, as well as to respect privacy and confidentiality [31]. It also resulted from the fact that an interaction of fat mass with maturation is often not observed [32].…”

“…Thus, changes related to time, may in itself be a factor that causes CC changes of adolescents. 26,27 Furthermore, during adolescence there is an intense burst of growth (growth spurt in) in height. This peak height velocity occurs on average two years earlier in girls (~ 12 years) than in boys (~ 14 years) and can be a framework of changes in different DC characteristics, independent of exposure to training 28 .…”
