The influence of addition of carbon nanotube and graphene platelets on characteristics of carbon/basalt fiber reinforced intra‐ply hybrid composites

Abstract: In this study, effects of addition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene platelets (GPLs) on characteristics of carbon/basalt fiber reinforced intra-ply hybrid composites were investigated. The composites were fabricated using vacuum assisted resin infusion molding (VARIM) method in two types including bare and 0.1, 0.5 wt.% of GPL and CNT nanoparticles filled hybrid composites. Fabricated normal and multiscale composites were cut by water jet and mechanical properties of specimens were examined by tensile, … Show more

“…In addition, the COOH group acted as a “nail” could capture more of CNTs‐GO PVA polymer, which in turn allowed the CNTs‐GO PVA binding more CNTs bundles. Moreover, the entanglement of additional CNTs in the PVA polymer formed a new bridging interphase, the bridges connect the CNTs bundles together and restrained CNTs bundles' slippage among C‐CY‐HP‐C, thereby, allowing more CNTs bundles to bearing load, giving the composites high peeling performance 30 . Therefore, the C‐CY‐HP‐C was difficult to be peeled off (Figure 3k).…”

After the C-CY-HP-C was peeled, its peeled surface was rough (Figure 3l), with a mass of CNTs film segments were teared, like plush to cover the peeled surface as shown in Figure 3m.…”

“…[53] Rubbery Plateau Region: (50 < T ≤ 150 C, α peak relaxation), due to the faster polymeric chain mobility at the higher temperature, the storage modulus in the rubbery plateau region area did not significantly increase. [23,56] 4.7.2 | Damping factor (tan δ)…”

“…[24,25] These nanomaterials can increase the roughness of the basalt fiber surface, alongside increasing the number of active sites on the fiber, and improving the interfacial bonding properties of the fiber and the composite. [26] Preda et al [27] decorated ZnO particles on basalt fiber to enhance the interface strength of basalt fiber and EP matrix, and determined the interfacial adhesion between the two by a single-fiber pull-out test. The results showed that the IFSS of the modified EP/basalt fiber composites increased by 42%.…”
