The influence of age, gender and ABO blood group on soluble endothelial cell markers and adhesion molecules

Abstract: The influence of age, gender and ABO blood group on soluble adhesion molecules and markers of endothelial function were tested by measurement of levels of von Willebrand factor, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), P-selectin, E-selectin and thrombomodulin in venous blood from healthy subjects. Only VCAM-1 showed a significant multivariate correlation with age (r = 0.1, P = 0.019), and thrombomodulin (P = 0.0001) and E-selectin (P = 0.026) were lower in the women. Sign… Show more

“…At healthy adulthood, the stability of sICAM-1 level across age is well known. 31,32,34,48 In our study, men had a slightly higher sICAM-1 level than women, probably due to the discrepancy in the older age group (48 -55 years). The variation of sICAM-1 level according to sex has not been established yet.…”

“…This may account for the differing results between the two studies although we could not find any association between age and levels of circulating VCAM-1. Indeed, where age has been found to correlate with levels of soluble VCAM-1 the association has been positive [23,29]. The study reported by Steiner et al included smokers whereas we excluded smokers and this may point to some interaction between cigarette smoking and diabetes with regard to levels of VCAM-1.…”

“…In multivariable analyses, male sex remained a strong predictor of higher sCAMs. Blann et al 28 reported that levels of sE-selectin in normal subjects were significantly higher in males than in females, although they did not find any significant differences in levels of sICAM-1 or sVCAM-1. 17␤-Estradiol has been shown by two groups to reduce IL-1-induced expression of CAMs at the mRNA level by inhibiting transcription in vitro, 29,30 with conflicting results reported by a third group using different methods.…”
