The Influence of Atlantic Tropical Cyclones on Drought over the Eastern United States (1980–2007)

Abstract: To assess the influence of Atlantic tropical cyclones (TCs) on the eastern U.S. drought regime, the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) land surface hydrologic model was run over the eastern United States forced by the North American Land Data Assimilation System phase 2 (NLDAS-2) analysis with and without TCrelated precipitation for the period 1980-2007. A drought was defined in terms of soil moisture as a prolonged period below a percentile threshold. Different duration droughts were analyzed-short term (lo… Show more

“…The approach adopted in this study could be extended to groundwater level records as a further line of research. Similar variability in drought terminations was reported by Bonsal et al (2011), and was attributed by Kam et al (2013) to differences in rainfall intensity determined by the synoptic conditions (e.g. tropical cyclones).…”

“…Mo, 2011;Kam et al, 2013;Maxwell et al, 2013;Patterson et al, 2013) have typically considered drought termination to be instantaneous. There are two notable exceptions: Bonsal et al (2011) subdivided drought into six stages, one of which is the concept of drought termination as a phase considered herein, and Nkemdirim and Weber (1999) expressed the concept of a rate of drought termination using Palmer Drought Severity Index units over time.…”

Europe and Australia experience the highest proportion of cluster displacement (76% and 58%, respectively); North America and Asia the highest proportion of asymmetric growth (23% and 22%, respectively); and North America, South America, and Africa of asymmetric shrinkage (25%, 25%, and 32%, respectively).…”
