The Influence of Ground Control Points Configuration and Camera Calibration for DTM and Orthomosaic Generation Using Imagery Obtained From a Low-Cost Uav

Abstract: Abstract. Technological improvement of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and computer vision algorithms, such as Structured-from-Motion (SfM) and Multi-view Stereo (MVS) have provided the possibility for high-resolution mapping and high-density point cloud generation using low-cost equipment and sensors. Orthomosaics and Digital Terrain Model (DTM) are the main digital products considering mapping purposes. Their quality is directly related to the sensors boarded on the UAV and data processing. Ground Control Po… Show more

“…Here point clouds were built from SfM-processed images [45]. As the sensor used was geometrically calibrated via photogrammetry, the control points defined yielded a high-precision three-dimensional model of the geo-referenced crop [46]. The relationship between pruning weight and the respective point clouds was calculated in the laboratory using linear regression.…”

“…Georeferencing, either direct or indirect, provides information about Exterior Orientation Parameters (EOPs). The EOPs information stored in External Information File (EXIF), which is a type of geotagged metadata along each individual image, is based upon onboard GNSS [ 37 ]. In this research, UAV images are captured by using DJI Phantom 4 Advanced.…”

“…In this study, the GCPs were used as the targets for georeferencing. They are necessary when conducting aerial surveys since they bring the projected to the spatial coordinate system and improve the accuracy of the data obtained (Garcia and Oliveira, 2020;Geavis, 2020). Moreover, they make it possible for real-world measurements to be obtained from the georeferenced spatial data.…”
