The influence of IL1RN VNTR polymorphism on HPV infection among some tribal communities

Abstract: Persistent infection of human Papillomavirus is the main etiological factor for cervical cancer. Austro-Asiatic tribes are early settlers in India and they have unique genetic variations compared to other people. The immunological response is crucial for the prevention of viral associated diseases. Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RN) is considered being an important regulator of host immune surveillance.A total of 45 Santali tribal women and 10 Kora tribal women were enrolled in the present study and de… Show more

“…IL1RN encodes a member of the interleukin 1 receptor antagonist that modulates related inflammatory responses, while TLR3 , codifies a Toll-like receptor protein involved in pathogen recognition and anti-viral inflammatory responses of the innate immune system 44 . Moreover, both genes have been associated with changes in susceptibility to infection with multiple pathogens including Ebola 45 , COVID-19 46 , papillomavirus 47 , Helicobacter pylori 48 , herpes simplex, varicella-zoster 49 , and HIV-1 50 . BCL11A , a gene associated with various haemoglobin-related traits, was also found within the top 1% F ST —XP-EHH signals in the NA vs Europe comparison (Supplementary Table S2 ).…”

“…Additional existing observations support the importance of interactions between HPV-infected cells and IL-1 family cytokines. Certain genetic polymorphisms in IL1RA are associated with decreased risk of developing cervical cancer and there are reports of different polymorphisms in IL1B that are either protective against or confer risk of developing cervical cancer (42)(43)(44)(45). Some of these sequence changes have not been well characterized with respect to their activating or inhibitory effects on IL-1β secretion or activity.…”
