The influence of immediately loaded implant treatment in the atrophic edentulous maxilla on oral health related quality of life of edentulous patients: 3-year results of a prospective study

Abstract: BackgroundTo evaluate oral health related quality of life (OHQoL) in edentulous patients treated with immediately loaded implants in the maxilla.MethodsFifty-one edentulous patients in two centers received six maxillary implants each were loaded within 24 h with provisional restoration. Definitive restoration was delivered 20–24 weeks later. OHQoL was evaluated preoperatively with the Oral Health Impact Profile 49 questionnaire (OHIP-49) and on five subsequent occasions. OHIP-49 includes seven domains represen… Show more

“…This could also improve long-term OHRQoL for patients making them more aware of future dental problems. After the loss of teeth suitable prosthetic rehabilitation has proven to increase the long-term OHRQoL in edentulous patients [24]. Although smoking is a well-known risk factor for gingivitis and plaque formation [32], the majority of patients in this study did not smoke.…”

“…This tolerance might reduce the impact the acute event has on their OHRQoL. An early and suitable prosthetic rehabilitation might alleviate the impact on OHRQoL [24].…”

“…Only patients with an implant-supported single crown by a 2-step surgical procedure were enrolled in our study, as those with multiple defects need longer operative time, more complex restorations, and even more complicated bone augmentation were excluded. Besides, those who revealed extremely high satisfaction scores on immediately loaded implants because of the shorter curative time were also excluded 24. According to multiple factors in different periods of implant treatment, the OIIP-Q was designed.…”

“…Therefore, immediate prosthetic rehabilitation is crucial to preserve the existing papilla, prevent the papillary recession, and favor maintenance of the newly created embrasure space. The incidence of food impaction around immediately loaded implants is therefore found of less as compared to the conventional two staged implant treatment . Additionally, it is crucial to extract the tooth as atraumatically as possible to preserve the bony cortical plates and maintain the height of the existing the papilla …”

[34][35][36][37][38][39] Therefore in order to prevent the onset of food impaction around implants, clinicians should recall and monitor patients every 3 to If an open proximal contact with no incidence of food impaction is observed, no treatment is indicated.…”
