Purpose of the Review The application of cut-to-length (CTL) technology for harvesting and processing timber from broadleaved tree species is a challenging process, due to thick branches, stem sweep, forks and high wood density. The objective of this review was to describe the current state of harvester use and characterise the effectiveness of mechanised forest operations for broadleaved and mixed forest stands in Europe, paying particular attention to productivity and product quality aspects. An additional aim was to identify the greatest difficulties associated with harvesting broadleaved tree species today and to indicate future challenges and areas for improvement. Recent Findings An interest in wider harvester use for broadleaved tree species started after the storm Lothar in France in 1999. Early experiences demonstrated that lower productivity is common when harvesting broadleaved tree species, due to limitations in delimbing and the high frequency of sweep. Initially, modifications were made to harvester heads, while a newly designed head (CTL 40 HW) was later developed within a European project in 2005–2007. Using various heads, very high productivity was achieved in some cases, but log recovery was unsatisfactory, with large tree tops left without delimbing. The delimbing was of lower quality and log length inaccuracy was observed, as well as economic losses due to damage to plywood caused by feed rollers. These issues resulted in a change in harvester head construction, including work on a patent for a head designed specifically for harvesting broadleaved tree species. Summary The harvester heads that have been developed to date for broadleaved tree species have mainly been used within Central Europe, where the high incidence of broadleaved tree species and their particular morphological features (thick branches and sweep) are a major challenge for CTL technology. There have been many research projects related to this issue: in the last 15 years, there were a few larger initiatives leading to the design and development of harvester heads for broadleaved tree species, with participation from institutions and universities in France, Germany and Poland. There are currently no ongoing initiatives, but the formation of new ones is strongly recommended because today’s forests have a growing share of broadleaved tree species and are being managed to an increasing extent with CTL technology.

Forest roads are of great economic importance as they ensure the transport of logs and forest biomass toward collection and processing centers, which is why they should be evaluated periodically, in order to establish the degree of degradation and periodicity and rehabilitation methodology and procedures. The main purpose of the paper is to follow the behavior of the Ciobanus forest road through specific tests over a difficult season of 5 months, in order to diagnose the degree of surface wear and structure degradation. Regarding the traffic on this forest road, an exhaustive study was made during the 2013–2017 period, and for in situ or in laboratory tests a more complex study during the year 2018, in the March-June period was also made. Out of the total of 20 tests that evaluated the Ciobanus forest road, 5 of them were classified as appropriate and 15 unsuitable for traffic, meaning the forest road had to be completely rehabilitated. Moreover, it has been shown that this forest road is part of the category of secondary forest roads and needs a total overhaul to cope with the increasing traffic or tonnage of trucks. Through the methodology and the obtained results, the paper supports the specialists in the field of forest roads to be able to diagnose or evaluate such a road, and to realize a program and its timing for maintenance.

Based on the knowledge of the dimensional and mass features of a forwarder, a model was developed to assess its mobility during timber forwarding uphill in a safe and eco-efficient way. The model is based on knowledge of the position of the forwarder’s centre of gravity, its declared payload and the length of the loaded timber, as well as the gradeability for uphill timber forwarding based on the traction characteristics of the vehicle. The model connects two research approaches, (1) vehicle–terrain approach (distribution of axle loads depending on the longitudinal terrain slope) and (2) wheel–soil approach (estimation of the traction characteristics of the forwarder based on the wheel numeric), concerning previous research: (i) underload on the front axle of the vehicle, (ii) overload on the rear axle of the vehicle, (iii) permissible tire load, (iv) minimal soil bearing capacity, (v) wheel slip. Simulation modelling for the assessment of the forwarders’ mobility range during timber forwarding uphill was conducted on an example of an eight-wheel Komatsu 875 forwarder, with a declared payload of 16,000 kg, equipped with 710/45-26.5 tires, for which the position of the centre of gravity was determined by the method of lifting the axle. The results of the distribution of the adhesion load on the front and rear axles of the forwarder indicated that, during timber forwarding of 16,000 kg and 4.82 m long hardwood logs on a terrain slope below 68%, there is no critical unloading on the front bogie axle, nor overloading on the rear bogie axle, i.e., wheel tire overload that could limit forwarder mobility. For the specified range of longitudinal terrain slope, a minimal cone index of 950 kPa for an exemplary forwarder is an environmental factor and was calculated based on the nominal ground pressure of the reference (heavier loaded) rear wheels of the vehicle. The forwarders’ mobility range was determined by the intersection curves of the gradeability (based on forwarders’ traction characteristics at wheel slip of 25% vs. cone index) and the curve of the minimal soil cone index.
