The Influence of Metamodeling Techniques on the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization of a Radial Compressor Impeller

Abstract: Aerodynamic turbomachinery component design is a very complex task. Although modern CFD solvers allow for a detailed investigation of the flow, the interaction of design changes and the three dimensional flow field are highly complex and difficult to understand. Thus, very often a trial and error approach is applied and a design heavily relies on the experience of the designer and empirical correlations. Moreover, the simultaneous satisfaction of aerodynamic and mechanical requirements leads very often to tedi… Show more

“…More importantly, with the increase of dimension, the amount of computation is growing exponentially. In reference, 17 ANN combined with genetic algorithm is applied to the optimization of centrifugal impeller. In order to establish ANN model, even after learning 662 models, the accuracy of surrogate model cannot be fully guaranteed.…”

“…It is well known that the design of radial inflow turbines is an inevitably multidisciplinary problem, which needs iterations between aerodynamic performance and mechanical feasibility. This complexity makes the design of radial inflow turbines a time-consuming task in the past decades and pushes forward tremendous growth in numerical optimization research [1][2][3] at the same time.…”

“…11,12 Due to the greatly reduced computational cost, the metamodeling techniques have been widely used for the analysis and design of engineering devices. 13,14 Typically, the applications of metamodeling techniques in turbomachinery design and analysis can be found in Chahine et al, 15 Mackman et al, 16 Sugimura et al, 17 Ma et al, 18 and Ju and Zhang. 19 One of the most important issues in metamodeling engineering problems is to evaluate the performances of metamodels and then select the most appropriate one for their design and analysis.…”
