The Influence of Microstructure on the Passive Layer Chemistry and Corrosion Resistance for Some Titanium-Based Alloys

Abstract: The effect of microstructure and chemistry on the kinetics of passive layer growth and passivity breakdown of some Ti-based alloys, namely Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-7Nb and TC21 alloys, was studied. The rate of pitting corrosion was evaluated using cyclic polarization measurements. Chronoamperometry was applied to assess the passive layer growth kinetics and breakdown. Microstructure influence on the uniform corrosion rate of these alloys was also investigated employing dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (… Show more

“…The increase of corrosion resistance was achieved by the role of V in decreasing the rate of corrosion as a result of the formation of oxide films on the surface of the alloys. This effect was found to increase with prolonging the immersion time of the Ti6AlxV alloys in the test medium from 1 h to 24 h and further to 48 h. particularly in implantation systems [24][25][26]. Other titanium alloys like Ti6Al7Nb and Ti13Cu4.5Ni, in addition to the Ti6Al4V alloy, have been selected as the only choice for the use in orthopedic implants [27].…”

“…The implants have characteristics related to the materials with which they are made and to their geometry, macroscopic and microscopic. The material normally used is commercially pure titanium, this material has characteristics of biocompatibility, low density, electrochemical stability, high mechanical strength and sufficient rigidity [23,24,25,26,27,28,29]. The macroscopic implant geometries evaluate macroscopic differences in the shape of dental implants.…”

“…As a promising structural material, titanium and titanium alloys are widely used in many fields [1]. Titanium materials can be used in aerospace, marine, automobile industry, chemical industry and biomedical field, because of their excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties [2][3][4][5][6][7][8].…”
