The influence of snow and ice coverage on the energy generation from photovoltaic solar cells

Abstract: This literature study examines previous studies of the optical properties of snow, and attempts to tie them together with studies on the effects of shading on photovoltaic solar panels. The study presents some information on the general properties of snow, and ice including geographic extent and some conditions of snow and ice formation. General optical properties of snow are examined, such as reflectance (albedo) and spectral transmittance. Common transmittance profiles for snow covers are also examined. The … Show more

“…Due to its clean, safe, and sustainable characteristics, photovoltaic (PV) power generation is still receiving continuous attention worldwide. PV technology has been improved in material [5] and maintenance strategy [6,7] in recent years. According to the latest data [8], the global installed capacity of new PV has reached 100 GW in 2018, accumulated to 505 GW.…”

“…Some of the main problems generated are total or partial obstruction of radiation, reduction of efficiency, cracking and delamination or mechanical loads. One advantage is the decrease of temperature of the modules [52], but there are drawbacks, e.g. light obstruction and moisture ingress on the modules.…”

“…Moutinho et al investigated the effects of solar-glass coatings on the adhesion forces related to soiling [106]. Andenaes et al worked on several surface coatings to prevent snow and ice formation on the surfaces [107]. Chen et al developed a method for measuring the sweeping force that reflects the cleaning efficiency of dust particles by a brush-on-disk apparatus, which would be beneficial for the solar panel's maintenance [108].…”
