Styrofoam was recycled and then loaded with different volume fractions of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWC-NTs). The frequency dependence of complex viscosity η*, storage modulus E/ and loss modulus E// were studied. All of them were increased with increasing MWCNTs concentration. The dependence of the complex viscosity on CNTs concentration was found to obey the rheological percolation behavior with low percolation threshold and depends on frequency. The addition of MWCNTs to recycled Styrofoam did not change the glass transition temperature. The tensile properties of all composites were studied at different temperatures. Stress-strain curves at temperatures 30, 50, 70 and 90 °C showed brittle behavior. The elastic modulus, ultimate strength, strain at break, and energy density to break were increased with increasing both CNTs concentration and temperature up to 90 °C. The elastic modulus had a tensile percolation behavior with a threshold value close to that obtained for η*. Plastic deformation of all composites took place at 105 °C and sharp decrease in both E and σb was observed. Conversely, sharp increase in both strain at break and energy density to break was observed at temperature 105 °C. The material at this temperature was converted from polydomain to monodomain configuration.

waste has been modified by sulfonation using sulfuric acid to form its corresponding sulfonated adsorbent and was further used for removing cadmium ion in its aqueous solution. The effect of the styrofoam weight, sulfuric acid concentration, temperature and time on the sulfonation result was evaluated. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by XRD, FTIR, and SEM. The cadmium ion adsorption was conducted by batch technique, where the kinetic parameters were determined. The research results attribute that the sulfonated styrofoam has been successfully prepared, and the highest sulfonation is exhibited by using 18M of the sulfuric acid, at 60 oC for 6 h with 5 g of styrofoam. The cadmium adsorption by the sulfonated styrofoam fits with the pseudo-second-order and the Langmuir isotherm model, while the native styrofoam follows the intraparticle diffusion mechanism and Freundlich isotherm model. The adsorption capacities of the sulfonated and the native styrofoam are 51.6 mg/g and 7.09 mg/g respectively, and their respective adsorption rate are 8.20 10-3 mg. g-1. min-1 and 26.9 10-3 mg.g-1 min-1/2 .

An attempt has been made to recycle Styrofoam waste to a novel functional polymer, Phenyl thiosemicarbazone surface (PTS). Polystyrene (PS) obtained from Styrofoam waste was acetylated and then condensed to PTS by reacting it with 4-Phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide ligand and characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Synthesized PTS was applied successfully for the treatment of lead contaminated water by batch extraction method. Sorption variables were optimized (pH 8, adsorbent dose 53mg, initial Pb(II) ion concentration 10mgl -1 and agitation time 90min) by factorial design approach. Lead uptake by PTS was found much sensitive to the pH of Pb(II) ion solution. The maximum removal (99.61%) of Pb(II) ions was achieved at optimum conditions. The Langmuir and D-R isotherm study suggested the monolayer, favorable (RL=0.0001-0.01) and chemisorption (E=20.41±0.12kJmol-1 ) nature of the adsorption process. The sorption capacity of PTS was found to be 45.25±0.69mgg -1 . The FT-IR spectroscopy study showed the involvement of nitrogen and sulphur of thiosemicarbazone moiety of PTS for the uptake of Pb(II) ions by fi ve membered chelate formation.
